Why Does My Glass Coffee Carafe Keep Making Popping Noises?
Glass coffee carafes can be a popular way to make coffee, but some make a strange, popping noise during heating. While this noise is normal, there are a few things which could be causing it.
Steam
When water is heated, it creates steam. When it reaches a certain temperature, it will boil, and this boiling can cause the glass of the carafe to expand and make a popping sound.
Heat
Glass has a lower melting point than ceramic or metal, so it can be deformed when exposed to high temperatures. This can also cause a popping sound.
Air Pockets
If there are any hidden air pockets in the carafe, when it’s heated, the pressure can cause them to burst. This can also cause a popping sound.
What To Do?
If you notice your glass carafe making popping noises, there are a few things you can do to try and prevent it:
- Preheat the carafe – If you preheat the carafe by filling it with hot water and letting it sit for 10 minutes, this can help reduce the popping sounds.
- Use lower temperatures – Keeping the temperature lower when making coffee can prevent the carafe from expanding and making popping noises.
- Don’t fill it too full – Make sure to leave some room at the top of the carafe so that the expanding steam can escape.
