Decorating Guide: Choosing The Right Rug Size For Your Coffee Table
Coffee tables are often the centerpiece of the living room and a great way to tie in all your furniture pieces. A rug under the table completes the look and brings the room together. Knowing what size rug to choose can be tricky. Read on for some guidelines to help you select the right size rug for your coffee table.
The size of the rug should be proportionate to the size of your coffee table. For a small coffee table, use a 4′ x 6′ rug or smaller. For larger coffee tables, opt for a rug that is 6′ x 9′ or bigger.
Two connected rugs of different sizes can be placed under the coffee table. For example, a larger 12′ x 15′ rug can be centered under the coffee table, with a smaller 4′ x 6′ rug placed on either side. This look is best for bigger coffee tables.
- Make sure the edges do not peek out: Set the length of the rug one foot past the length of the coffee table. For example, if your coffee table is in a 3′ x 4′ dimension, the rug should be 4′ x 5′.
- Consider the shape of your rug: If your rug has a distinct edge, for example a square rug on a rectangular table, make sure the edge of the table overlaps the rug. This will give the illusion that the table is floating on the rug.
- Don’t worry about perfect alignment: If you move the furniture frequently, don’t worry about perfectly lining up the rug under the cords. You don’t have to suffer for perfection.
Choosing the right size rug for your coffee table ensures the room looks put-together and elegant. Remember to consider the size, shape and design of your rug when selecting a size to ensure the look is as perfect as you imagine it.
