How to Sand and Stain a Coffee Table
Staining and sanding a coffee table can transform it from a mundane piece of furniture to the centerpiece of your home. With just a few simple steps, you can add both protection and style to your beloved table. Here is how to sand and stain a coffee table:
Preparation
- Clean – Before sanding, it is important to thoroughly clean your coffee table surface with a damp, soapy cloth. Cleaning will help remove surface-level dirt, dust and debris.
- Repair or Replace – If your coffee table has any signs of wear and tear, now is the time to fix them. Holes, chips and cracks must be repaired before sanding. Also, any pieces with substantial rot or cracks should be replaced.
Sanding
- Choose Your Sandpaper – Depending on the condition of your table, you should use either a coarse or fine-grit sandpaper. Coarse-grade sandpaper is appropriate if the wood is deeply pitted, or if you need to remove the stain or old paint. Use fine-grade if the wood is smooth.
- Sand the Entire Surface – Before staining, it is important to sand the entire surface – including the sides, legs and any grooves – in the same direction as the wood’s grain. This will help ensure an even finish.
