How to Restain a Wooden Coffee Table
If your coffee table is looking worn and outdated, staining can give it a brand new appearance. Restaining wood is a relatively easy process, and with a few simple tools and materials, you can make your coffee table look great again.
What You Will Need:
- Sandpaper (coarse and fine)
- Stain of desired color
- Clear finish
- Steel wool
- Paint brush
- Drop cloth
Steps:
- Sand existing finish: Start by sanding away the existing finish with coarse sandpaper. You don’t have to sand off the whole finish, but make sure it is rough enough for the new stain to adhere to.
- Clean the wood: Remove the sanding dust from the wood and clean it with a soft, damp cloth. Allow the wood to dry before you move on to the next step.
- Apply the stain: Brush the stain on in the direction of the grain. Don’t overbrush it, and don’t leave any pools of stain on the wood. If you do, wipe them off quickly with a clean cloth.
- Allow to dry: Let the stain dry completely before the next step.
- Apply clear finish: Apply a clear finish in the same direction as the grain. Don’t over-apply it, and use a clean, dry cloth to wipe away any excess.
- Allow to dry again: Let the clear finish dry completely.
- Buff the surface: Buff the surface of the wood with steel wool until it is smooth. You can also use a soft cloth for this step.
- Final sanding: For a final touch, lightly sand the wood with fine sandpaper, then lightly buff the surface with the steel wool.
Once you have completed these steps, your coffee table should look like brand new!
