How to Restain a Wood Coffee Table
Restaining a wood coffee table can give it a fresh look or even change its color. It is a process that requires some elbow grease, so be ready to work! With a few simple steps and supplies, you can easily restain your wood coffee table.
What You Will Need
- Sandpaper (80, 120, 240 grit)
- Tack cloth
- Wood stain
- Old rags
- Mineral spirits
Step 1: Prepare the Wood
Start by sanding the coffee table with 80 grit sandpaper. This will remove existing stain, varnish, and/or paint. Then, use 120 grit and 240 grit sandpaper to smooth out the surface. Finally, wipe off the wood with a damp tack cloth to remove the sawdust.
Step 2: Apply the Stain
Protect your clothing and work area by covering it with an old rag. Gently shake the can of stain before using, then apply it evenly to the wood using an old rag. Make sure to apply it in the same direction as the wood grain. Allow the stain to penetrate the wood for 15 minutes and then wipe off the excess with a clean rag.
Step 3: Finishing Touches
If there are any spots of excess stain, gently remove them with mineral spirits on a rag. Allow the table to dry overnight before applying a coat of polyurethane for protection.
Following these three easy steps will have your wood coffee table looking like new. With a beautiful new finish and an old rag for protection, it’s easy to restain a wood coffee table.
