How to Refurbish a Coffee Table Top
If you own a coffee table that is beginning to show signs of wear and tear, refurbishing it is not as time-consuming or difficult as you may think. The key is to use the right materials and have a plan of attack. Follow the steps outlined below to prevent your coffee table from deteriorating further and put an end to its lacklustre look.
Step 1: Gather the Supplies
To refurbish your coffee table top, you will need the following:
- Sandpaper – medium or fine grain
- Screwdriver
- Soft cloth or sponge
- Mineral spirits
- Primer
- Paint
- Polyurethane – gloss or matte finish
- Paintbrush
- Putty knife
Step 2: Clear the Area
Before you begin, make sure the area where you’ll be working is clean and free from dust and debris. Cover the surrounding area with a drop cloth or plastic sheet, or move the coffee table out of the way if possible.
Step 3: Prep and Remove Old Finish
Use a screwdriver to remove any hardware on the top surface of the table. Sand the surface with some medium or fine grain sandpaper until all of the old finish is removed and the wood is smooth. Wipe the excess dust away with a soft cloth or sponge. Apply mineral spirits to the wood and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it away with a clean cloth.
Step 4: Apply Primer and Paint
Apply a coat of primer to the surface and let it dry. Apply a coat of paint in your desired colour. Let it dry before applying a second coat if necessary.
Step 5: Apply Polyurethane
Once the paint is dry, apply a coat of polyurethane. Let the polyurethane dry before applying a second coat, if desired.
Step 6: Put Everything Together
Once the polyurethane has dried, put the hardware back on the table and replace any removed components. Your coffee table top is now ready for enjoyment!
Refurbishing a coffee table doesn’t have to be a difficult task. As long as you’re prepared with the proper supplies and follow the steps outlined above, you’ll be on your way to enjoying your new and improved coffee table top!
