Refinish a Laminate Coffee Table
Laminate is a common material used to make furniture, such as coffee tables. It can get scratched, dulled, and stained over time. To restore the original look of a laminate coffee table, you’ll need to refinish it. Here’s how to get started:
Gather Supplies
Before you begin, make sure you have the following items on hand:
- Sandpaper (coarse – 250 grit for rough areas; medium-fine – 400 grit for general sanding; extra-fine – 1500 grit for final sanding)
- Tack cloth, or other lint-free cleaning cloth
- Mineral spirits
- Stain or paint of your choice
- Laminate sealant
Sanding
The first step is to sand the laminate surface. Start with the coarser sandpaper, and use it to remove scuffs, scratches, and other damage. Move on to the 400 grit paper and sand until the surface is smooth. Then, finish with the extra-fine paper to give the laminate an even feel and appearance.
Cleaning and Staining
Once the surface is sanded and smooth, use a lint-free cloth and mineral spirits to clean off any dust or debris. Allow the surface to dry, then apply the stain or paint with a cloth or roller. Give the surface at least 24 hours to dry.
Sealing the Table
Finally, apply a coat of laminate sealant to protect the finish and keep it looking like new. Allow for at least one to two hours of drying time before lightly sanding with fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe off any dust or debris with a clean cloth, then apply a second coat of laminate sealant and let dry.
