How to Build a Coffee Table with a Lift Top

Tools and Materials

You will need:

  • Table saw
  • Miter saw
  • Circular saw
  • Drill and assorted bits
  • 1/4” Plywood
  • 2×2 lumber
  • Wood glue
  • Paint/stain
  • Hinges
  • Lift mechanism
  • Wood screws

  • Cutting the Plywood – Measure and cut the plywood to size. You will need a top and bottom panel, two side panels, and four supports. Use clamps to hold the panels in place while they are cut.
  • Assembling the Frame – Connect the four support pieces to the two side panels by drilling and countersinking the screws. Next, attach the top and bottom panels. Measure twice, cut once.
  • Installing the Hinges – Attach the hinges to the frame. Do this carefully and make sure the screws are countersunk into the wood. You may need to chisel a hole out or use a hole saw to make space for the hinges.
  • Installing the lift mechanism – Attach the lift mechanism to the underside of the top panel using the instructions provided with the kit. Be sure to adjust the mechanism so that it will lift the top with ease.
  • Finishing – Sand, paint or stain and add any other decorative details. Allow the wood to dry completely before assembling the frame and installing the lift mechanism.

Building a coffee table with a lift top is a relatively simple DIY project that can be completed in a day. With the right tools, materials and instructions, you can create a stylish, solid piece of furniture that will last for years to come.
