Fixing a Cracked Glass Coffee Table
Glass coffee tables can add a unique elegance to any room in your home, but it only takes an ill-placed elbow or an unruly pet to crack the glass. When this happens, the task of fixing the coffee table can seem overwhelming, so follow these steps to repair your coffee table and get back to enjoying your favorite hot beverage.
Gather Materials
Before starting the repair process, make sure to gather the necessary materials. These include:
- Glass Glue
- Glass cutter
- Rag
- Safety goggles
- New sheet of glass
Cutting the Glass
Once all materials are acquired, begin by placing safety goggles on and then measuring and cutting a new sheet of glass to fit over the cracked glass. Secure the fabric rag over the top of the cracked glass to minimize the chances of cutting yourself.
Using the glass cutter, trace the measurements along the opposite side of the glass than the side that the cracked glass rests on. Ensure that the measurements are precise and even. Press the glass cutter firmly around the circumference of the of the glass while using moderate pressure to score the line. If necessary, go around the mark multiple times.
Removing the Glass
Now that the line has been scored, use two hands to firmly grab either side of the glass to break the glass at the scored line. Wear protective gloves when doing this to prevent injury. Once the glass has been broken, vacuum off the excess glass pieces and clean off the table base.
Applying Glue
Next, apply the glass glue to the seam around the edges of the new glass. Use a rag to spread the glue evenly, making sure to cover all edges. Then, position the new, cut glass over the cracked glass in the table’s base. The new glass should fit snugly and securely.
Curing The Glue
Finally, allow the glue to cure overnight before use. The new glass should now be securely held in place on the table base. Make sure to check the seams to ensure they are sealed and secure.
And with that, your cracked glass coffee table is fixed and ready to use!
