How to Build a Tailgate Coffee Table
Creating the perfect tailgate setup can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors and show your spirit. One cool and handy item you might consider adding to your setup is a tailgate coffee table. Here’s how to build one:
Step 1: Acquire Supplies
You’ll need the following supplies for building your coffee table:
- Wood: You’ll need five pieces of ¾ inch thick plywood cut in the following dimensions: 19”x19”, 19”x18”, 19”x14”, 19”x9”, and 18”x14”
- Hardware: One 18”x18” steel tailgate panel, four 1.7/8″ long hex bolts, four flat washers, two hairpin legs, 3.2″ flat screws, two hammers, and a drill
- Tools: Chalk line, jigsaw, sandpaper, saw horses, sander, and screwdriver
Step 2: Measure and Cut Wood
Using saw horses, lay your 19”x19” piece of plywood down as a base for your table. Mark out the other pieces of plywood and carefully cut them out using a jigsaw. Use a sander to smooth the edges after cutting.
Step 3: Attach Steel Panel
Drill four pilot holes in the 19”x19” base. Place the steel panel on top of base and insert the four hex bolts and flat washers, securing the steel plate to the base.
Step 4: Install Hairpin Legs
Using a screwdriver, install the two hairpin legs onto the 19”x14” and 19”x9” pieces of wood. Place the pieces together with the steel panel facing down, and attach the hairpin legs using flathead screws.
Step 5: Assemble
Using the chalk line, draw a line around the base plane and assemble the other four pieces. Secure the pieces together with a hammer and screws. Sand, paint, and seal the surfaces for protection if desired.
Step 6: Enjoy!
Your tailgate coffee table is now ready to go! Spread out it with your favorite snacks, drinks, and other tailgate essentials and enjoy your day outdoors!
